  1. Collaborative research can be great for grad students, because you learn a great deal from other scientists when you work collaboratively. In particular, you may have the opportunity to learn techniques, or areas of specialization, from more senior scientists that you would not have had any other way to learn. You also make connections that may help you with future career opportunities. (Connections made by working together are usually much more enduring and valuable than connections formed through more artificial forms of networking.) But collaborative research is only great when everyone is treated fairly and equitably in the process. (Grad students are very vulnerable to getting “burned”.)
