  1. The university I am at has a few awards for mentorship excellence, but this does not appear to have a very widespread affect on the quality of mentorship here. I think it would be a more effective incentive for quality mentorship if evaluation of mentorship was a routine part of decisions that really matter to faculty such as funding decisions or tenure/promotions. (But the tricky part is figuring out what the metrics should be for evaluating mentorship, since only the students know for sure and they are not always free to be honest about this.)

Sociologists for Women in Society as well as some other social science groups give mentorship awards (which are much coveted) primarily using letters of nomination from PAST students (who are not in faculty or nonacademic jobs). Am Sociological Assn gave a teaching award to.Bob Hauser that primarily was a recognition of his outstanding mentoring of generations of graduate students and junior faculty. Having powerful role models for what a mentor can do is both instructive and inspirational. People learn to pay it forward.
